The Microwave

The microwave is found in 90% of American homes, that's not surprising. It's convenient, fast, and easy. Wouldn't you expect a product that's in 90% of homes to be thoroughly investigated for safety? I know I sure would.

The FDA limits the amount of radiation that can leak from a microwave throughout its lifetime to 5 milliwatts per square centimeter at approximately 2 inches from the microwave. that's not too bad considering your cell phone has a specific absorption rate of 1.6 watts per kilogram (varies on handset model).

Powerwatch (a company that researches the links between electromagnetic fields and health risks) recommends microwaves be checked for leakage at least annually, since microwave emissions can change with normal use.

The microwave isn't that bad for you, to be near it anyway. What it does to your food on the other hand is a totally different story. A study done in 2003 by "The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture" found that broccoli "zapped" in the microwave with a little water lost up to 97 percent of its beneficial antioxidants. By comparison, steamed broccoli lost 11 percent or fewer of its antioxidants. We are the only animals on earth who destroy the nutritional value of our food before eating it. All other animals eat their food in its natural, unprocessed state, but we actually go out of our way to destroy the nutrients in our food before eating it. No wonder humans are the least healthy mammals on earth.

 Another problem with microwave is that carcinogenic toxins leak out of your plastic and paper containers, and into your food. The worst contaminants is BPA, an estrogen-like compound commonly used in plastic products. Dishes made specifically for the microwave often contain BPA, but many other plastic products contain it as well.

If you put something with nutrients in your microwave chances are, it's going to come out as a carcinogenic. Sounds delicious, right?

Do your health a favor: Get rid of your microwave, or donate it to charity. You can't use something you don't have! You'll have a little more counter space, save on electricity, and better your health.
